Trauma informed Therapy

Rewiring How You Feel About the Past

My trauma-informed approach combines Internal Family Systems (IFS) , EMDR, and Solution focused Therapy(SFT). These approaches work really well together, because they address the way we experience trauma in an embodied way.

How It Works

IFS is a way to map out your inner world. It helps us get to know the different parts of you, and how they show up in different situations. By bringing compassion to these parts first, we create a sense of internal safety. Once your system feels secure and ready, we can bring in EMDR to do the heavy lifting on a neurobiological level. Helping your brain and body finally process and release those stuck, painful memories. Finally, SFT will help you define and deploy your internal resources to make positive changes for the future.

How It Can Help

Reducing Distress: Memories that used to trigger panic or sadness become neutral facts of your past.

Changing Limiting-Beliefs: Shifting thoughts from "It was my fault" or "I’m unsafe" to "It’s over now" and "I am resilient."

Physical Relief: It helps decrease body tension and hyper-vigilance associated with past stress.

What You Might Bring

Disturbing Memories: An accident, a loss, or a difficult breakup that you can't stop thinking about.

Phobias & Anxiety: Intense fears or social anxiety rooted in past experiences.

Performance Anxiety: Getting 'blocked’ at work, in sports, or in creative pursuits.

Complex Grief: When you feel unable to move forward after a loss.

Unhealthy coping mechanisms: When you feel stuck in your responses to stress or difficult emotions.

Relationship Challenges: If you are struggling with conflict, communication, intimacy and connection.

What to Expect

As a psychotherapist, whilst I often integrate all three trauma informed approaches, it can be just as effective to try a single approach. For example, if you feel that talking therapy is not for you, and you would like to spend less time in therapy; then EMDR is a good option.

SFT has more of a ‘coaching feel’ to it, and is also usually short term work. Unlike other trauma informed approaches, there are exercises that you can engage with out of session.

IFS is usually longer term work, and is effective for cumulative trauma such as difficult childhood experiences. It’s particularly helpful for understanding how you interact with others in all of your important relationships.

The Goal: To reach a place where you can remember the past without being overwhelmed by it, allowing you to live fully in the present.
